PhD Topic: Improving Disaster Management with Text Mining Algorithms and Social Media Data

Clemens Havas is a PhD student with a background in computer science at the University of Salzburg’s Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS since 2017. Before starting his PhD, he completed his Bachelor and master’s degree in Information Technology and Systems Management at the University of Applied Sciences, Salzburg. For his master’s project he worked on optimization problems in the field of medical imaging together with a research group at the City University of New York, USA.  During his Master studies, he was already working in different projects at Z_GIS including data comparisons, visualization, and indoor navigation for smartphone apps.

Currently, he is employed in the Horizon 2020 – research project “Evolution of Emergency Copernicus services (E2mC)” that aims to combine social media analysis and crowdsourcing capabilities to generate a new information product for the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. Besides this he is also part in other projects that include social media analysis and disaster management. His research focus is on the use of state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms in combination with geospatial analysis methods to obtain information as accurate and as fast as possible in the first hours of a disaster by utilizing new data sources like social media data.
