Short-Biography: Prof Josef Strobl is a Professor at the University of Salzburg, leading its Centre for Geoinformatics and the GIScience Institute, Austrian Academy of Science. He holds degrees in Geography from Vienna University and has been teaching GIScience and related subjects at universities worldwide. He is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, serves as a board member for international organizations like GSDI and GISIG and on the editorial boards of leading journals in Geoinformatics and GIScience. As president of the Austrian Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information (AGEO) he has been and still is promoting and spearheading various SDI-related initiatives. Josef Strobl leads a group with an excellent record in distance education, spatial analysis and remote sensing, distributed architectures for SDI as well as real time and mobile services and applications ranging from planning for sustainability, regional energy systems and emergency preparedness to resource management. Prof. Strobl has been instrumental in developing and implementing the worldwide UNIGIS postgraduate distance learning programme, heads the annual AGIT andGI_Forum symposia in Salzburg and is working with a global network of partner institutions in education, basic and applied research in Geographic Information Science. |
