Scientific Profile:

Izabela Sitko holds an MSc degree in Geography from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland (2006), where she further continued her research in the field of geoinformatics and satellite image processing for urban LULC change detection. At that time, she was especially active as the academic teacher of various GIScience and Technology classes, at bachelor, master and post-graduate level (within UNIGIS Krakow).

In 2010, Izabela joined the team of Prof. Euro Beinat, shifting her scientific interests into urban big data analytics and collective sensing. She contributed to several applied projects on monitoring urban dynamics, gaining extensive experience in mining and management of diverse data types, including social media, call data records and GPS tracking data.

In 2012 Izabela started a PhD program at the University of Salzburg and joined Doctoral College GIScience. In her research, she explores digital footprints of cities in order to better describe and measure how far and how fast urban areas and communities become smarter. She is also involved in European FP7 project Milesecure-2050: Multidimensional Impact of the Low-carbon European Strategy on Energy Security, and Socio-Economic Dimension up to 2050 perspective, where she explores perception of sustainable energy as recorded with social media.

April-October 2013, Izabela was visiting the MIT Senseable City Laboratory, with the half-year research internship.

PhD Thesis Topic (working title): Digital dimensions of cities:  measuring urban environments through collective sensing

Abstract:

The PhD project focuses on the use of collective sensing approach to monitor and analyse performance of cities, based on the syntax and semantic analysis of emerging data generated by human interaction with digital technologies such as social networking, cellular phone usage or digital payment activity. The overall aim is to provide additional methods and models to understand how cities move towards a smarter and more sustainable development and how they compare with each other. The work focuses on identification and analysis of those urban attributes that can be best captured and described through collectively sensed data and quantified as meaningful urban metrics. Developed metrics should complement common city indicators offering increase in the time and space granularity of the analysis, as well as the inclusion of an actual human behavior and social perception as parts of the measurements.
