GIScience Symposium 2013
|
The Doctoral College “GIScience” provides a unique environment for high quality research related to GIScience and Geoinformatics. A two-day symposium on September 20/21, 2013 will offer insights to research projects, achievements and intermediate results. The objectives are two-fold:
The symposium is open complimentary to all interested persons but with prior registration. This event will provide a creative and stimulating atmosphere to exchange ideas and experiences between early stage researchers and experienced researchers. Date: September, 20/21, 2013 Venue: University of Salzburg, Edmundsburg, Mönchsberg 2, 5020 Salzburg.

Science Exchange
|
Science Exchange 2012 was a first initiative to cooperate between the three FWF-funded Doctoral College’s (DK) at the University of Salzburg. All participants met for two days at a seminar hotel in Germany – close to lake Chiemsee. If we cannot communicate our research to scientists from other fields clearly – how should non-scientists understand what we are doing? Therefore each student presented in a four minute speech the essence of the research work but without using spatialized words and without going into technical deails. An additional goal was to get to know the students personally, and how the other DKs function. Pictures and impressions are available here. |

GIScience conference in Columbus, Ohio
|
During the GIScience Conference there will be offered a full day workshop, taking place on September, 18, 2012. This workshop will be organized by Thomas Blaschke, University of Salzburg, Austria & Maggi Kelly, UC Berkeley, US. The purpose of the workshop is to define and discuss a methodology for bridging the remote sensing Centred GEOBIA approach and GIScience concepts in order to delineate, manage and manipulate objects. In GIScience, attempts were made to provide the theoretical foundations for objects such as the concept of fields. In remote sensing the concept of Geographic Object Based Image Analysis has strongly gained In popularity. A preliminary literature analysis shows that the terms „OBIA“ and „GEOBIA“ attract more citations in scientific literature than the terms „GIScience“ and „Geographic Information Science“. The workshop will critically discuss the way to strengthen the theoretical and methodological foundations. It will bring together leading experts from both fields, and aim to demonstrate the potential of extending GEOBIA concepts beyond images. Please note that the deadline for submission has been postponed to June, 15, 2012!

Young Researcher Forum
|
The first Young Researchers’ Forum took place during the GI-Forum 2012, offering PhD students a unique possibility to present and discuss their research plans. In those two days the students received feedback, and had the possibility to exchange comments and views on their doctoral research in an inspiring academic community of PhD students, experienced researchers – including key note speakers from the GI-Forum – and faculty members of the GIScience Doctoral College at the University of Salzburg, Austria, the European Marie-Curie ITN CHANGES, and the Doctorate School in Global Change Science and Policy (ChangeS), Italy. Pictures and Impressions of the Forum are available here. Detailed information about the programme please find here or visit http://www.gi-forum.org. |

The DK GIScience Thesis Workshop 2012 is a Ph.D. thesis development workshop which is organized hand in hand with the public DK GIScience Symposium. The Workshop will be held on Friday April 20th and Saturday April 21st at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, University of Salzburg. The DK GIScience Symposium is a public forum in which Ph.D. students can meet and discuss their work with each other, as well as with a panel of experienced researchers and practitioners. The symposium will be held on Friday afternoon on April 20th at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Hellbrunnerstraße 34, University of Salzburg. |
